PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE, KEEP IT IF YOU CAN...

“Patience is not a desperate waiting in doubt, but a hopeful waiting in confidence.” Anonymous

“Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones; and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily task, go to sleep in peace. God is awake.”
Victor Hugo (1802-1885)

Patience is a virtue. But patience can also be very difficult. Especially in this era of breaking news, fast food, overnight delivery and Social Medias, patience seems all but forgotten. Most of the time, we think that if we are being patient we would miss out on something we desired. So we become the hare in the race and fast track ourselves through career choices and opportunities and even relationship for fear that we would be forgotten and miss out.
Do you remember the story of the hare and the tortoise; it is the tortoise that wins the race, because he is constant and sure-footed. In trying and difficult times, learn to have patience, to wait on the Lord and to trust his perfect timing.

  • WAIT FOR THE LORD

Have you ever seen someone get away with something? Many movies set the drama by showing a character that gets away with bad behavior and usually at the end of the movie the person finally gets what s/he deserves. This is fun to watch in a movie, but in real life it is so difficult to see someone get away with bad deeds or behavior. We want justice and we want them now. But what does God say about being patient? Read the following scripture from the bible.

‘Be still. Be patient. Wait for the Lord to act. Don't be upset when other people succeed. Don't be upset when they carry out their evil plans.’ – Psalms 37:7

All those times that we were wondering why God isn’t doing something about it, we have no idea what God is doing in that person’s heart and mind. Not only this, but there are a lot of other situations that require our patience. Waiting is one phenomenon that cannot be eliminated from our lives. We might be waiting for a job opportunity, for our life partner to show up, for our health to recover. In situations like these, we can wait for God to take care of everything.

‘I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.’ Psalms 40:1

  • PERFECT TIMING
We must always remember that God’s timing is not the same as our timing. God’s timing is perfect! When things don’t happen as per our timetable we usually become discouraged and we become impatient with God. Trust His perfect timing!
Do you remember the story of Abraham? God gave him an incredible promise. He told Abraham that he would have thousands of grandkids and great grandkids.

"The Lord took Abram outside and said, "Look up at the sky. Count the stars, if you can." Then he said to him, "That is how many children you will have." – Genesis 15:5

But the problem was that Abraham didn’t have any children yet. Both he and his wife were too old to start having kids! Abraham waited for 10 years for God to keep His promise and he still had no children. Abraham and his wife became impatient. So Abraham married his wife’s maid and had a son. Several years later, Abraham’s first wife also had a son. There was a lot of conflict between these two sons, and much heartbreak because of Abraham’s impatience. Did God keep His promise to give Abraham children through his first wife? Yes. However, God’s timing was not the same as Abraham’s timing.
Our timing is not the same as God’s – sometimes it's opposite. Sometimes we think we need something much earlier than we do. But be sure of this: God does not show up late! He knows what we need and when we need it.

Good day!

LESSONS LEARNED IN LIFE

They say life is the best teacher. I say life is the toughest teacher because it is the only school where, the test precedes the lessons. Ever since we enrolled to the ‘School of Life’ we all have learned a thing or two about life and how to live it. Here are some lessons I have learned in life.

  1. Love with all your heart without the expectation of getting it back. The more you give the more you have!
  2. You can’t change a darn thing by worrying, anticipating, speculating, stressing or obsessing. Only God can! What’s meant to be will be!
  3. Life will keep throwing the same test at you, until you learn the lesson!
  4. You don’t have to bend over backwards to please everybody. You can’t please everyone so stop trying!
  5. Not every person you meet in your life is meant to stay.
  6. Relax, chill and enjoy life once in a while. We get so caught up in the process of life that we forget to live it!
  7. Don’t rush anything. Let things take their normal course. Remember, if you set a caterpillar free of the cocoon before it’s time, it will die!!
  8. Never lose yourself in the process of gaining someone.
  9. Learn from every experience and never let an opportunity pass by.
  10. Remember to appreciate and give gratitude for what you have and you will be given more things to be grateful for.
  11. You get what you settle for.
  12.  Sometimes it’s difficult to explain or understand why bad things happen but they are there for a reason.
  13. What is meant to be yours will come to you and stay, what’s not meant to be yours no matter how much you try will never be.
  14. Don’t be so quick to judge and don’t be too quick to trust.
  15. There are always two sides to every story. If not more! ;)
  16. Not every incident that happens in your life is an omen, sometimes things just happen.
  17. Talk less, Listen more.
  18. Learn to live with the consequences of your decisions and to make peace with it!
  19. Every person, every encounter, and every situation has something to teach you.
  20. There is only so much you can do about certain things.
  21. Never let your expectations go wild and you will eliminate a lot of disappointment and frustration.
  22. Some people just don’t deserve a fraction of your time or a piece of your mind and heart.
  23. Learn to differentiate between what/who matters and what/who doesn't.
  24. Things change, people change, we change; the only thing that doesn't change is God.
 Love and Peace,
Lidia S.

We are ONE NATION under GOD!!!

“… Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God.” Psalms 68:31

On April 14, 2015, a heartbreaking news headlined Medias about the xenophobic violence which took place in South Africa leaving at least 5 people dead (among which one is from Ethiopia) and causing hundreds of immigrants to flee from their homes. Some South Africans have accused immigrants of taking jobs and opportunities away from them which led to the violent attacks directed at fellow African brothers and sisters. South Africa, the ‘Rainbow Nation’ which is home to about five million immigrants mostly Africans, is being erupted by some racist attackers.

Before we have recovered from the shocking news, another tragedy happened in Libya. On a grisly footage released by ISIS recently, 30 Ethiopian Christian brothers were brutally murdered in Libya.

Where is the world headed to? Brothers killing brothers, innocent souls being taken in the name of religion. As citizens of the Continent and the World, each and every one of us has a responsibility to unite to stop violence and terrorism!!!!

We are ONE NATION under GOD, all created in the image and likeness of HIM!!! It’s time to stretch out our hands and to pray together with one heart for our people, our Country, our Continent and the World as a whole! If we do that God will hear our cry and have mercy upon us!!!! As Second Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sins and heal their land.”

Amen!!!

May the souls of the victims rest in peace! Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and relatives of the victims!

May Peace prevail on Earth!!!

THE CHINESE BAMBOO TREE (中国竹子)

These past few days I had been seeking some inspiration so that I can come up with a good inspirational story or idea to share with my readers. I kept contemplating on various topics picking up one idea after another without success. But today as I was reading a book by my favorite author, I discovered a very interesting story which sparked my interest and ultimately gave birth to this article.

In the Far East, there is a tree called the Chinese Bamboo Tree. This tree has unique characteristics that make it different from other trees. When this bamboo tree is planted, watered and nurtured for a whole year nothing breaks through the ground.

The second year you water it, fertilize and nurture it and nothing happens.

The third year comes you water, fertilize and nurture it, still nothing! The process goes on and on during the fourth year. Imagine how tiresome it becomes after a while.

However, sometime during the fifth year, something marvelous happens! The Chinese bamboo tree sprouts and starts to grow, suddenly shooting up to a height of 90 feet. All those years when the farmer saw no growth above the ground, the bamboo tree was spreading its root system, miles of root, getting ready!

Are you in a situation where you do everything you are supposed to precisely, you toil day and night but seemingly to no avail? You can work for weeks, months, and years on end but your dream is showing no visible sign of progress? Don’t become discouraged, your day is coming! All you need is a pinch of faith and persistence.

During all those years of toil with nothing visible happening, what kept the Chinese bamboo tree growers going was faith. Begin today to sow your seeds of dreams and nurture them doing all that is expected of you persistently and tirelessly. Just have faith that you are laying the ground works from which your future success will sprout and never ever give up because you don’t know when your ‘bamboo tree’ will show up!

Happy Friday!!!

The Attitude of Gratitude

“Let’s choose today to quench our thirst for the ‘good life’ we think others lead by acknowledging the good that already exists in our lives. We can then offer the universe the gift of our grateful hearts.” Sarah Ban Breathnach

Have you ever given something to someone who refused to say thank you, or worse who complained, or who always asked for more without any gratitude from their side?
How did that make you feel? Or how do you think it would feel? I am sure we all know the answer to that question, it doesn’t feel so good and you might even regret giving that person anything in the first place.  So think of God, Jehovah, Allah or Universe whichever name you prefer to call it for a moment. He has blessed you with food, shelter, family, friends, job, education and gazillions of other things. And most importantly He has given you Life. But how often do you give gratitude for these things. In fact how often do you even notice that these things are blessings given unto you and that they could easily be taken away from you and the only reason that they are not is because of His infinite kindness towards you. Sure you may not have that car you want today but what about your healthy legs that you can walk with. Don’t you think you should be thankful for those? What if you couldn't be able to walk one day?

Learn to appreciate the small things in life. Remember that the oak tree was once a tiny seed. When you learn to appreciate the small things in your life then you start the gratitude snowball effect. The more you are thankful, the more things you will be given to be thankful for. Even when you face disappointments thank your way through them. As you start seeing the positive in every situation and practicing gratitude you will begin to find that even adverse conditions cannot keep their grip on you. Your habit of gratitude will cause them to lose their power over you.
Like any habit, the habit of gratitude takes time till it becomes a permanent part of your life and becomes a lifestyle. Start with the small things in your life ‘I am thankful for my food. Thank you for the air I breathe. Thank you for keeping me alive and well.” Eventually, you will become accustomed to it and will begin to see more and more good things to be thankful for in your life.
Set aside each day a time to be thankful. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a long prayer time, or hours of meditation. You can incorporate it into something you are doing during the day. Perhaps each time you sit to eat or maybe when you take a shower or assign an object as a gratitude object so that every time you see it you will be reminded to be grateful. Get creative and think of more ways to make thankfulness your daily habit.
Have an awesome day!
Lidia

Who said we have to wait for Thanks Giving Day every year to be thankful? Today, what are you grateful for? J

THE MIRACLE IN WONDERLAND

It was a cloudy morning in Wonderland. The town was wrapped in a shroud of white, a familiar blanket in Wonderland, during this time of the month.
It started off as a normal day. People were hustling and bustling to get by their everyday life. The shops across the street were opening, the milkman was preparing his cart to start his delivery, the newspaper delivery boy had just finished delivering newspapers, the beggar who sat at the same corner of the street every day to beg for alms had settled in his spot. It was all a familiar everyday scene until the beggar saw something unusual distantly up in the sky. There was a beautiful golden sparkling thing descending from the sky. The beggar was astounded. “What is that beautiful thing descending from the sky?” he exclaimed in his amazement. The newspaper delivery boy who was engaging in a conversation with the butcher man turned his gaze to look at what the beggar was talking about. It was a miracle! So after that the newspaper boy told the butcher man who told the maid who told the neighbors, it went on and on.  The information spread very quickly and soon enough people started gathering in the streets of Wonderland to witness this amazing incident. Everyone was stunned. What could it be? It looked so beautiful.

After lots and lots of speculations about what the sparkling thing could possibly be, people started conversing about what they would do if they were lucky enough to be the one to grab hold of it. One woman said “I would sell it and buy a new house for my family.” Another man said “If I caught it and became rich, maybe Becky would leave that man and come back to me.” A little girl shouted “I will keep it beside my bed and look at it every day!” It was one wish after another. The beggar thought to himself ‘If I got it my life would change forever. I will no longer be known as the beggar in town. I won’t have to hope for people’s charity. But who am I kidding it won’t be me! I am the lowest of them all, the least important, and the poorest.’ He thought ‘It is pretty, magnificent, and miraculous and I don’t deserve it.’ So, as everyone stretched their hands to the sky and kept pushing one another out of the way hoping that the beautiful golden thing would land on their hands the beggar kept his hand folded on his chest watching the frenzy.
As the sparkling thing came closer and closer to their sight, to their amazement, it was coming in the direction of the beggar who was standing some distance away from the crowd but he had already made up his mind that it wasn't meant to be his and was not even looking up at it or trying to reach for it. Hence, the one who was standing closest to the beggar grabbed it.
The one who needed it the most and who could have grabbed it, missed it!

Don’t let an opportunity slip by, thinking ‘I am not good enough, I am not smart enough, I am not pretty enough.’ Answer every opportunity that knocks on your door no matter how impossible it may seem because opportunity seldom knocks twice!

FAILURE: A ‘FRIEND’ OR A ‘FOE’?

Failure is no stranger to us. We have all failed at some point in our lives, at one thing or another. If there is anyone who claims that s/he has never tasted the bitter cup of failure at least once in their lifetime, then that person has never tried anything. Having said that, what is failure really? My definition of failure is that ‘It is the temporary state or condition of not meeting one’s goals.’ Failure is not permanent, unless we make it so ourselves. So, you failed! It is not the end of the World! And it doesn’t mean that you can’t change and rise above your current realities. If you think failure is permanent, think again!! Check out this list of successful people, whom I’m sure you are all familiar with, and you will be surprised how many times they have failed before they became the world renowned achievers they are.

  1.  Henry Ford: Ford is today known for his innovative assembly line and American-made cars, he wasn’t an instant success. In fact, his early businesses failed and left him broke five time before he founded the successful Ford Motor Company.
  2. Oprah Winfrey: Most people know Oprah as one of the most iconic faces on TV as well as one of the richest and most successful women in the world. Oprah faced a hard road to get to that position, however, enduring a rough and often abusive childhood as well as numerous career setbacks including being fired from her job as a television reporter because she was “unfit for tv.”
  3. Walt Disney: Today Disney rakes in billions from merchandise, movies and theme parks around the world, but Walt Disney himself had a bit of a rough start. He was fired by a newspaper editor because, “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.” After that, Disney started a number of businesses that didn’t last too long and ended with bankruptcy and failure. He kept plugging along, however, and eventually found a recipe for success that worked.
  4. Albert Einstein: Most of us take Einstein’s name as synonymous with genius, but he didn’t always show such promise. Einstein did not speak until he was four and did not read until he was seven, causing his teachers and parents to think he was mentally handicapped, slow and antisocial. Eventually, he was expelled from school and was refused admittance to the Zurich Polytechnic School. It might have taken him a bit longer, but most people would agree that he caught on pretty well in the end, winning the Nobel Prize and changing the face of modern physics.
  5. Thomas Edison: In his early years, teachers told Edison he was “too stupid to learn anything.” Work was no better, as he was fired from his first two jobs for not being productive enough. Even as an inventor, Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. Of course, all those unsuccessful attempts finally resulted in the design that worked.
  6. Orville and Wilbur Wright: These brothers battled depression and family illness before starting the bicycle shop that would lead them to experimenting with flight. After numerous attempts at creating flying machines, several years of hard work, and tons of failed prototypes, the brothers finally created a plane that could get airborne and stay there.
  7. Abraham Lincoln: While today he is remembered as one of the greatest leaders of our nation, Lincoln’s life wasn’t so easy. In his youth he went to war a captain and returned a private (if you’re not familiar with military ranks, just know that private is as low as it goes.) Lincoln didn’t stop failing there, however. He started numerous failed business and was defeated in numerous runs he made for public office.
  8. Michael Jordan: Most people wouldn’t believe that a man often lauded as the best basketball player of all time was actually cut from his high school basketball team. Luckily, Jordan didn’t let this setback stop him from playing the game and he has stated, “I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot, and I missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

So, is failure a friend or a foe? It depends on your perception of it. But for me, after having read these success stories, failure is definitely a stepping stone and a recipe for success!

THE HORSE PARABLE

We, human beings, have a tendency to categorize things we process whether they are situations or people. We often judge ours and other peoples’ situations quickly, without enough information and with no idea of what the future holds.

Here is a parable that will give us all a very important lesson:

‘There once was a poor old man who owned a beautiful white horse.
Whenever noblemen passed through the village, they always noticed the horse and offered handsome sums of money for the stallion. But the old man always declined their offers, saying, "This horse is my friend. How can I sell my friend?"

One morning the old man awoke to find the horse was gone. The village people gathered and said, "Old man you were a fool not to sell the horse. You could have been wealthy! Now it has been stolen, and you have nothing. It is a great misfortune!" But the old man replied, "Don't go so far as to say that. Whether the horse was stolen or not, or whether it is a misfortune or a blessing, is unknown. All we know is that the horse is not in the stable."

Some days later the horse returned, bringing with it several beautiful wild mares. Again the village people gathered, and they said, "Old man you were right! The horse was not stolen, and it was not a misfortune. It was a blessing, and now you have many fine horses!" But the old man replied, "Again you go too far. Don't say it's a good thing, don't say it's a bad thing. Just say the horse is back. Whether it is a blessing or a misfortune is unknown."

Some days later the old man's only son began to train the wild mares, but he was thrown and trampled, and one of his legs was badly broken. Again the village people gathered. "Oh old man, you were right! It was not a blessing but a great misfortune, and now your only son is lame! With a sigh the old man replied, "Don't say it's a good thing, don't say it's a bad thing, just say my son has broken his leg. Whether it is a blessing or a misfortune is unknown."

It happened that a few weeks later the country went to war, and all the able bodied young men were forcibly taken for the military. Only the old man's son was passed over, because he was crippled. The whole village was crying and weeping, for they believed their sons would probably be killed and never come home to them. In their grief they came to the old man and said, "You were right old man, your son's injury has proven to be a blessing. Your son may be crippled, but he is with you, while our sons are gone forever! The old man simply shook his head and said, "Will you never learn? Only say that your sons have been forced into the military and my son has not. More than that is not known."

MORALE OF THE STORY => Observe the reality of what is and accept it. It’s what it is! There is no need to judge! Simply accept things as they are and leave the rest to the Creator. You never know what tomorrow brings!

Lidia

Every cloud has a silver lining

They say ‘Every cloud has a silver lining’. How could the bad things that happened in our life have a positive side, how can our problems which seem bigger than the Mount Everest have a good aspect to them?

The loss of a prized possession, the missing of an opportunity, the end of a relationship that was supposed to last forever, the loss of a job that you loved so much … what if this all happened to your benefit? Hard to believe, right? But God has something better in store for you, a better job, a better possession, a better relationship.

Clouds are the difficult phases in our life and silver linings are the rays of hopes. Every difficulty is a test of a person’s strength, and ability. When someone passes through an ordeal, s/he comes out stronger, better and brighter. So every calamity has a scope for progress. Nothing is permanent.  It doesn’t rain all year the sun will eventually come out. Just stay calm and maintain a positive attitude. Because, the night is always darkest before it dawns, the end of a relationship is a beginning of another one, the loss of a possession is an opportunity to get something better, difficult times lead to better days, failure leads to success. When God empties your hand he is actually preparing you to receive something better. Hence, all of the clouds in your life have a silver lining just believe and never give up!

‘God is the master of restoration taking the broken and damaged and making them beautiful.’

Thank you for reading,

Lidia
